About the Ivel Valley Commissioning Group
Ivel Valley
Ivel Valley is an area of East Mid Bedfordshire. It is predominantly a rural area comprised of small towns and villages which follows the length of the River Ivel from Sandy in the north to Stotfold in the south.
Compared to England and the East of England, the population in Ivel Valley is relatively healthy and life expectancy is higher than average.
Population growth over the next 20 years is expected to be much higher than average, particularly around Stotfold, Shefford and Biggleswade. Policy 33 of the Bedfordshire Structure Plan states that there are plans for 6,600 new homes to be built up to 2011 in East Mid Bedfordshire.
There is no acute hospital in the area. Patients mainly attend Bedford, Lister Hospital (E&N Herts NHS Trust) and Addenbrookes Hospital in Cambridge (please can we hyperlink to the hospital sites). There are nine general practices in the area, all of which are part of the Practice Based Commissioning (PBC) group, Ivel Valley Commissioning Group Limited (IVCG).
Ivel Valley Commissioning Group
In 2005, the Government announced that it wished to see the commissioning of medical care devolved to smaller areas or “practice based clusters”. Ivel Valley Commissioning Group Limited was formally established in December 2009, although as a group we have been meeting regularly together since October 2006.
The Ivel Valley practices serve a population of approximately 84,000 patients (April 2011) and all have a shared vision of how they would like to operate and commission medical services. Our one main focus is to monitor and deliver the best possible medical care for all of our patients.
